Quinta São Gião, Alvarinho Barrica 2021

Family business from Guimarães in northern Portugal, with vineyards on granite soil in the Ave sub-region. This is not a common fresh Vinho Verde, but an Alvarinho matured in barrels for more depth. The labels refer to the work of painter Jorge Pinheiro.

What you smell
Pineapple, grapefruit and orange peel, with mandarin. Beneath that, a slight hint of biscuit, white pepper, and wet stone.

What you taste
Dry, with firm fresh acidity that keeps the wine crisp and clear. Medium-bodied, with lime and a hint of peach. A salty, stony undertone and a long finish. Has the potential to mature for several more years.

How it's made
100% Alvarinho from granite soil. Short pre-fermentation skin maceration, followed by fermentation in stainless steel and finished in 500-liter French oak barrels with different levels of toasting. Eight months in barrels with regular bâtonnage (stirring of the yeast lees for more texture), then another approximately fourteen months in stainless steel before bottling.

Serving
Serve at 10 to 12°C. Decanting is not necessary. A wider white wine glass helps release the aromas.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled sea bass: the salty undertone and fresh acidity mirror the briny fish and cut through the grilled fat.
  • Risotto with lemon and Parmesan: the barrel aging provides enough body to handle the creamy rice.
  • Aged hard cheese: the acidity refreshes the salty, fatty character of the cheese.
