Quinta São Gião, Alvarinho Superior 2023

Quinta São Gião is a family business in Guimarães, in the Ave sub-region. This is a more serious Alvarinho than your average Vinho Verde: made for more depth and not for quick thirst-quenching.

What you smell
Citrus and peach, with a spicy note and a slight hint of smoky stone in the background.

What you taste
Firm and broad on the palate with fresh acidity that keeps it tight. A salty, stony undertone and a slightly spicy aftertaste that lingers longer than you would expect from a white summer wine.

How it's made
100% Alvarinho from granite soil. Short skin maceration before fermentation adds extra aroma and texture. Six months of aging on fine lees provides body; a small portion matured in French oak for some extra structure.

Serve
Pour between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius in a somewhat larger white wine glass, so that the aromas can open up. Decanting is not necessary.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled sea bass: the fresh acidity cuts through the fat of the fish, and the salty undertone enhances the sea flavor.
  • Baked chicken with lemon and herbs: the body of the wine complements the meat, and the spicy note matches the marinade.
  • Aged goat cheese: the acidity breaks down the creaminess of the cheese and keeps your mouth fresh.
