Carlo Schmitt, Rosengärtchen Riesling trocken 2025

This Riesling comes from a steep terraced vineyard that was established before the First World War. The vines grow on blue slate with quartzite. The soil contains more than 75% stone. Due to the steepness of the terrace, machine work is impossible; everything here is done by hand.

What you smell
Citrus and green apple, with a smoky, stony undertone. Crisp and clear, not sweet or floral.

What you taste
Dry and vibrant, with fresh acidity that keeps the wine upright without becoming sharp. The slight residual sweetness balances this out. A salty, stony undertone extends into the long finish. Has the potential to age for several years.

How it's made
100% Riesling from ungrafted vines on blue slate and quartzite. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, followed by long aging on the lees. This lees aging gives the wine extra body and texture.

Serve
Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. Decanting is not necessary. A slightly larger white wine glass helps the aromas to develop fully.

Pairs well with

  • Baked sea bass with lemon: the fresh acidity cuts through the fish and mirrors the citrus notes.
  • Thai green curry: the slight residual sweetness tames the spiciness and keeps the whole dish balanced.
  • Young goat cheese: the salty minerality beautifully complements the fresh, creamy cheese.
