Carlo Schmitt, Herrenberg Riesling GG 2025

The Longuicher Herrenberg is Carlo Schmitt's steepest vineyard, a southwest-facing slope on the Mosel. What's special here is that two soil types meet: red slate from the Schweicher Annaberg and blue slate from the Herrenberg itself. You'll find that difference between the two soils reflected in the glass.

What you smell
Citrus and green apple, with white peach and a hint of white blossom. Beneath that, a stony note.

What you taste
Crisp and clear, with a fresh acidity that gives the wine tension without becoming sharp. The 4.6 grams of residual sugar are barely noticeable as sweet, but perfectly round off the whole. A salty, stony undertone lingers into the long finish. Has enough backbone to age for years.

How it's made
100% Riesling from red and blue slate. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel, followed by long aging on the lees. No wood, which keeps the fruit and soil notes to the fore.

Serving
Pour at 10 to 12 degrees in a generously sized white wine glass. Decanting is not necessary, although it gains complexity if you give it half an hour.

Pairs well with

  • Baked sea bass with lemon: the fresh acidity lifts the delicate fish meat and mirrors the citrus note.
  • Sushi and sashimi: the salty undertone complements raw fish, and the high acidity cuts through soy and fatty pieces of salmon or tuna.
  • Goat cheese with herbs: the fresh character contrasts beautifully with the creamy, savory cheese.
