Accornero, Girotondo Monferrato Nebbiolo

The Accornero family makes wines in Vignale Monferrato that are normally associated with Barbera, but this cuvée comes from a small 0.4-hectare Nebbiolo plot on an east-facing slope. Production has been limited since 2006, from vines planted in 2003. A low yield of 35 hl per hectare ensures concentration.

What you smell
Cherry and raspberry, with dried flowers and a slight earthy note underneath.

What you taste
Garnet red in the glass, elegant and refined in structure. The tannins are ripe and fine-grained: they provide grip without drying out your mouth. A salty, fresh undertone keeps the wine lively and ensures length.

How it's made
100% Nebbiolo, manually thinned in early August. Traditional vinification with submerged cap and programmed pump-overs. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in French oak tonneaux. Twelve months of aging in 500-liter tonneaux, unfiltered, not cold-stabilized.

Serving
Serve at 16°C in a large Burgundy glass. Decanting for an hour helps the wine open up.

Pairs well with

  • Mushroom risotto: the earthy notes of the wine mirror the umami of the mushrooms, while the freshness cuts through the creaminess.
  • Roast duck with cherry sauce: the red fruit in the glass picks up the sauce, the tannins balance the fat of the duck.
  • Aged Castelmagno or Toma cheese: the salty note of the wine enhances the salt crystals in the cheese.
