Marqués de Murrieta, Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2011

The flagship wine of Marqués de Murrieta, originating from La Plana: 40 hectares with vines planted in 1950 on the highest grounds of the estate. The 2011 is a classic Rioja vintage that is now reaching its peak.

What you smell
Ripe cherries, blueberries, and cassis, interwoven with Mediterranean herbs. Beneath that, black pepper, cloves, and a hint of mocha.

What you taste
Lively and harmonious, with tannins that provide structure without drying out your mouth. The wine fills your mouth without feeling heavy and finishes with a long, elegant aftertaste. Ready to drink, but will easily keep for another ten years.

How it's made
Tempranillo and Mazuelo, hand-harvested and fermented separately. 28 months of aging in French and American oak, followed by 13 months of rest in concrete to allow the wine to integrate.

Serve
18°C. Decant well in advance, at least an hour. Large Bordeaux glass.

Pairs well with

  • Roast lamb with thyme: the spicy notes in the wine enhance the herbal crust, while the tannins cut through the fat of the lamb.
  • Venison steak: the earthy undertone and firm structure can stand up to the intense game flavor.
  • Aged Manchego: the salty, nutty cheese brings out the fruity side of the wine.

Scores

  • James Suckling: 98/100
  • Robert Parker (Wine Advocate): 97/100
  • Decanter: 98/100
  • Wine Spectator: 94/100
  • Vivino: 4.6/5
