Vietti, Barolo Castiglione 2018

Vietti is a family business that has been operating in the Barolo region since 1919 and is known for the artistic labels on its bottles. The Castiglione is their entry-level wine, made from grapes from several small vineyards in the municipality of the same name. The 2018 is a warm vintage that produced approachable, riper wines.

What you smell
Red cherry, raspberry, and dried rose petals. Beneath that, spicy notes of liquorice and a hint of tobacco.

What you taste
Medium-bodied with a firm backbone. The tannins are fine-grained and provide grip without drying. Fresh acidity balances the riper fruit notes. The finish is long, with recurring spicy and floral accents. Already accessible, but can age for another five to ten years.

How it's made
100% Nebbiolo from different plots around Castiglione Falletto. The grapes are fermented separately per vineyard. After that, the wine matures for almost thirty months in large Slavonian oak barrels (botti), which ensures gradual oxidation without adding an oak flavour.

Serve
Between 16°C and 18°C. Decant for at least an hour; the wine needs oxygen to open up. A large Burgundy glass works best.

Pairs well with

  • Brasato al Barolo: the rich sauce and tender meat mirror the fruity depth of the wine, while the tannins cut through the fat.
  • Risotto with mushrooms or truffle: the earthy notes in the wine align with the umami of the mushrooms.
  • Aged Parmigiano Reggiano: the salty, granular texture of the cheese softens the tannins and enhances the spicy finish.

Scores

  • Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 94 points
  • James Suckling: 92 points
  • Vivino: 4.2 / 5 points
