Vega Sicilia, Pintia 2020

In 2001, Vega Sicilia acquired vineyards in Toro to prove that the region is capable of more than just powerful, unpolished wines. Pintia comes from poor, stony soils where the Tinta de Toro (the local Tempranillo clone) yields small, concentrated grapes. After 11 months of aging in barrel and amphora, the wine rests for another 30 months in bottle before its release.

What you smell
Dark fruits like blackberry and black cherry, with undertones of licorice, cocoa, and a hint of smoked meat. The amphora component keeps the fruit fresh and limits the oak influence.

What you taste
Juicy and full-bodied, yet surprisingly elegant. The tannins are silky smooth and provide structure without drying out your mouth. Beautiful balance between ripe fruit and freshness, with a long, slightly spicy finish. Already approachable, but can easily age for 15 years.

How it's made
100% Tinta de Toro from hand-harvested grapes. Aged for 11 months in a mix of French oak barrels and amphoras, followed by 30 months of bottle aging.

Serving
At 18°C. Decanting is not essential, but opening it half an hour before serving will allow the wine to unfurl more beautifully. Choose a large Burgundy glass.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled lamb chops: the roasted fat and spices complement the soft tannins and dark fruit.
  • Braised beef cheek stew: the rich, lacquered sauce matches the concentration of the wine without either overpowering the other.
  • Aged Manchego: the salty, nutty cheese brings out the fruity side of the wine.

Scores

  • Robert Parker: 94/100
  • James Suckling: 95/100
  • Vinous: 94/100
