Tenuta Il Poggione, Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (Jeroboam)
Tenuta Il Poggione has been making Brunello since the late 19th century from Sant'Angelo in Colle, one of Montalcino's warmest zones. The 2017 is a rich vintage: a dry, hot summer resulted in concentrated grapes with high extract. In jeroboam (3 liters), the wine matures more slowly and elegantly than in a standard bottle.
What you smell
Ripe cherries and blackberries, with notes of leather, tobacco leaves, and a hint of dried herbs beneath. Warm and inviting.
What you taste
Full-bodied and generous, yet without heaviness. The tannins are fine-grained, providing grip without drying out your mouth. A fresh acidity keeps everything in balance and prolongs the finish. Already approachable, but built to gain complexity for years to come.
How it's made
100% Sangiovese from old vineyards, hand-harvested. Long aging in large French oak barrels (botti), followed by further refinement in bottle. The large oak provides subtle oxidation without overpowering the grape.
Serving
At 18°C. Decant for at least two hours, preferably longer. Large Bordeaux glasses to allow the complex aromas to unfold.
Pairs well with
-
Braised wild boar: the rich, dark sauce echoes the warm fruit notes, while the tannins balance the fat.
-
Bistecca alla fiorentina: the classic Tuscan match. The roasted meat brings out the wine's spiciness.
-
Aged Pecorino: the salty, granular texture of the cheese contrasts beautifully with the velvety mouthfeel.
