Ornellaia, Le Volte 2023

Le Volte is the entry-level wine from Ornellaia, the Bolgheri estate that put the Tuscan coast on the map as a serious wine region in the 1980s. The same vineyards, the same approach, but made to drink now instead of waiting ten years.

What you smell
Ripe blueberries and blackberries, with a hint of dark fruit that is immediately inviting without becoming overly sweet.

What you taste
Full and juicy, but with enough freshness to remain light-footed. The tannins are smooth and glide away without drying out your mouth. Elegant finish that lingers long enough to make you want a second sip.

How it's made
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Each grape is fermented separately in small steel tanks. The wine then ages for ten months, partly in concrete, partly in oak barrels previously used for the main Ornellaia wine. This gives subtle oak influence without overpowering the fruit.

Serve
16-18 degrees Celsius. Decanting is not necessary: the 2023 is already smooth and open directly after uncorking.

Pairs well with

  • Pasta with ragù: the rich meat sauce resonates with the full fruit, while the freshness of the wine balances the fat.
  • Grilled sirloin steak: the soft tannins complement the charring without clashing with the meat.
  • Charcuterie board with Italian cured meats and pecorino: the saltiness of the ham brings out the fruit, the cheese extends the finish.

Toscane draait om Sangiovese, maar de streek is veel breder dan dat. Van de hooggelegen wijngaarden van Chianti Classico tot de zilte kust van Bolgheri: elke plek geeft de druif een ander karakter.
