Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove 2022

Ornellaia's second wine, made with the same care and from the same vineyards in Bolgheri. The 2022 vintage saw a dry, warm summer, but cool nights in September kept its freshness intact. Already approachable, but built to age for ten years.

What you smell
Ripe black fruit (blackberries, blackcurrant), a hint of spices and a subtle touch of toasted wood in the background.

What you taste
Juicy and generous on the attack, with firmly packed tannins that provide grip without dominating. The acidity keeps the whole fresh and lively. Long, velvety finish with an aromatic aftertaste.

How it's made
Blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Hand-picked and fermented per plot in stainless steel or concrete. Then aged for 15 months in French oak in the estate's cellars.

Serve
16-18°C. Let it breathe in a decanter for an hour to truly release its complexity. A large Burgundy glass works well.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled lamb chops with thyme: the herb-sweet meat finds a perfect partner in the ripe fruit notes and firm structure.
  • Bistecca alla fiorentina: classic Tuscan match, the roasted meat plays beautifully with the wine's oak aging.
  • Beef stew with wild mushrooms: the earthy mushrooms and tender flavour of the meat complement the depth and velvety tannins.

Scores

  • Jancis Robinson: 17/20
  • James Suckling: 95/100
  • Falstaff: 94/100

Toscane draait om Sangiovese, maar de streek is veel breder dan dat. Van de hooggelegen wijngaarden van Chianti Classico tot de zilte kust van Bolgheri: elke plek geeft de druif een ander karakter.
