Neri, Borrigliona 211 2022

This red comes from the northeast flank of Mount Etna, at an altitude of 800 meters in Contrada Borrigliona near Linguaglossa. The vineyard has vines over 90 years old on volcanic soil. The yield is low (35 quintals per hectare), which explains the concentration.

What you smell
Intense and layered. Sweet spices and the scent of the Mediterranean macchia: wild thyme and laurel.

What you taste
Balanced, with tannins that provide structure without drying out your mouth. The finish is long and lingering. The high altitude provides freshness; the fruit remains crisp instead of heavy.

How it’s made
Mainly Nerello Mascalese, traditionally fermented in open vats with daily punching down of the cap. Maceration for 10 to 15 days, followed by 14 months of aging in French oak (second and third use), resulting in subtle wood notes that don't overpower.

Serving
Serve at 16 to 18°C. Opening an hour beforehand or decanting helps the aromas open up. Use a generous glass.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled lamb chops: the wine's spicy nose complements the roasted meat, and the tannins cut through the fat.
  • Venison ragout: the long, fresh finish balances the deep, gamey flavors.
  • Aged Pecorino: the saltiness of the cheese lifts the fruit and softens the structure.

Scores
James Suckling: 96 points
The WineHunter: Gold
