La Rioja Alta, '904' Gran Reserva Selección Especial 2015

La Rioja Alta only makes this Gran Reserva in exceptional years. The grapes come from high-altitude vineyards and are selected berry by berry. The 2015 vintage benefited from warm days and cool nights, leading to slow, even ripening.

What you smell
Wild strawberry and red cherry, with undertones of tobacco, ground coffee, and cedarwood. After some time in the glass, brioche emerges, with a hint of caramel.

What you taste
Silky smooth, with fully integrated tannins that don't dry out your mouth. The alcohol and acidity are perfectly balanced. The finish is long and delicate, without heavy notes. This wine can age for decades but is already beautifully accessible.

How it's made
90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. The wine ages for over four years in American oak barrels. Every six months, it is traditionally racked by hand and by candlelight, ensuring clarity without filtration.

Serving
Serve at 17°C. Decanting is not necessary, but use a generous glass so the aromas can unfold.

Pairs well with

  • Leg of lamb with rosemary: the silky tannins and cedar notes complement the lightly grilled character of lamb without overpowering it.
  • Duck breast with cherry sauce: the red fruit in the wine echoes the sauce, while the structure balances the duck's fat.
  • Aged Manchego: the nutty, slightly salty cheese works well with the subtle toasted notes from the oak.

Scores

  • Tim Atkin: 96/100
  • Robert Parker: 95/100
  • James Suckling: 98/100
