Klinger, Vernatsch 2024

Klinger makes this wine in Pressano, in the heart of Trentino. The Schiava comes from old vines between 35 and 70 years old, planted at an altitude of 350 meters. This combination of altitude and old roots yields a light red wine with more depth than you might expect.

What you smell
Red fruits like cherry and strawberry, with a light spicy note and a hint of almond.

What you taste
Light-bodied with fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively. The tannins are soft and don't dry out your mouth. Short to medium finish, made to be drunk young.

How it's made
100 percent Schiava, hand-harvested at the end of September from red siltstone and clay-loam soil. The grapes macerated on their skins for 15 days in open tonneaux. The wine then aged for 12 months in barriques, followed by at least 6 months in the bottle. The use of wood provides roundness without overpowering its light character.

Serve
Serve at 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, lightly chilled. Decanting is not necessary. A regular red wine glass is sufficient.

Pairs well with

  • Vitello tonnato: the fresh acidity cuts through the creamy tuna sauce and keeps the dish light.
  • Grilled chicken with herbs: the light red fruit and soft tannins complement the tender meat without overpowering it.
  • Pasta with tomato sauce: the acidity in the wine matches the acidity in the tomato.
