The Mascot, 2020

The Mascot is Will Harlan's project, crafted from grapes sourced from the younger vineyards of Harlan Estate, BOND, and Promontory. While those estates have decades-long waiting lists, The Mascot offers the same viticulture and expertise in a more accessible form. The 2020 vintage was harvested extremely early due to persistent drought, resulting in concentrated grapes with preserved freshness.

What you smell
Soft red fruits on the forefront, think ripe cherry and plum. Behind that, a dark, savory layer unfolds with hints of cedar and tobacco.

What you taste
Generous and elegant simultaneously, without the heaviness often found in Napa. The tannins are velvety and coat your mouth without drying. A beautiful tension between ripe fruit and bright acidity, with a long, polished finish. Can be enjoyed now, but has at least ten more years ahead of it.

Serving suggestion
Between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. Give the wine room in a large Bordeaux glass; decanting is not necessary but is permitted.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled beef tenderloin with shallot reduction: the fine tannins cut through the fat, while the red fruit mirrors the sweet shallot.
  • Lamb racks with herb crust: the wine's herbaceous, savory undertones enhance the rosemary and thyme.
  • Roasted duck breast with cherry jus: the cherry fruit in the wine and on the plate complement each other, the acidity cuts through the richness of the duck.
