La Rioja Alta, Viña Arana Gran Reserva 2016
La Rioja Alta is one of the few wineries that still operates its own cooperage, where they build their American oak barrels themselves. The Viña Arana line celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year. This 2016 vintage comes from a classic, cool year in Rioja Alta, resulting in a wine with more finesse than power.
What you smell
Wild strawberries and red berries, with vanilla, toasted bread, and a hint of cinnamon underneath. Subtle and inviting, not overwhelming.
What you taste
Silky smooth and surprisingly fresh for a wine with so much barrel aging. The tannins are fully integrated; you feel them as a velvety texture without any dryness. The acidity keeps everything lively. Long finish with a hint of cedar. Can be enjoyed now, but has at least ten more years ahead of it.
How it's made
Tempranillo with a small percentage of Graciano, harvested by hand. Aged for three years in American oak from their own cooperage, then another three years in bottle before release.
Serving
Between 16 and 18°C. Decanting is optional; half an hour in a generous glass is sufficient. Choose a Burgundy glass to allow the aromas to develop.
Pairs well with
-
Grilled lamb with rosemary: the herbaceous fat of the lamb resonates with the vanilla notes, while the freshness of the wine lightens the dish.
-
Aged Manchego: the nutty, slightly salty cheese pairs beautifully with the subtle oak aging and red fruit.
-
Duck breast with cherry sauce: the fruity sauce echoes the red fruit in the wine, and the richness of the duck calls for those velvety tannins.
