Château Barde-Haut, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2023

Barde-Haut is located at the highest point of Saint-Émilion, on a plateau of clay and limestone. This terroir gives the wine its combination of ripeness and freshness. The 2023 scores remarkably high with critics and is mentioned as one of the estate's strongest vintages.

What you smell
Black cherries, wild blueberries and plums. Beneath that, liquorice, fresh mint and a hint of espresso.

What you taste
Silky smooth and creamy on the palate, with plenty of dark fruit. The tannins are fine-grained: they provide structure without drying. A mineral, slightly saline undertone keeps it fresh. The finish is long, with an echo of cherries.

How it's made
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Hand-harvested, then the juice flows by gravity through the cellar to avoid oxidation and preserve the fruit optimally.

Serving
15-16°C. Uncork 1 to 2 hours beforehand or decant briefly, so that the aromatic layer opens up.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled lamb: the creamy fruit balances the richness of the lamb, while the mineral freshness accentuates the herb crust.
  • Duck breast with cherry sauce: the cherries in the wine mirror the sauce, the tannins cut through the fat.
  • Grilled tuna: the meaty texture of tuna can stand up to the body of the wine, the freshness keeps the dish light.

Scores

  • James Suckling: 97-98/100
  • Jane Anson: 95/100
  • Jeff Leve: 94/100

Bordeaux is de bakermat van de blend: vrijwel geen enkele rode wijn hier bestaat uit één druif. De rivier de Gironde deelt de streek in tweeën, en aan elke oever overheerst een andere druif en een andere stijl.
