Marqués de Murrieta, Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2007

The flagship wine of Marqués de Murrieta, sourced from the La Plana vineyard where the vines have stood since 1950 at the highest point of the estate. This 2007 rested in the bottle for more than five years before its release.

What you smell
Ripe red fruit, truffle, incense, and mild spices. Years of aging have allowed everything to blend into one complex whole.

What you taste
Silky smooth and perfectly balanced. The tannins are so interwoven with the wine that you barely experience them as such, only as a structure that supports the whole. The finish lingers for minutes. It can easily last another ten years, but is already at its peak now.

How it's made
Tempranillo and Mazuelo, manually harvested. The Tempranillo aged for 28 months in American oak, the Mazuelo in French oak. After blending, the wine rested in concrete, followed by a minimum of three years of bottle aging.

Serve
18 to 19 degrees Celsius. Decant about 20 minutes beforehand; this allows the layers to open up. A large Burgundy glass works better than a classic Bordeaux glass.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled sirloin steak: the roasted fat and Maillard crust mirror the ripe, soft tannins.
  • Risotto with fresh truffle: the earthy notes in the wine and the truffle enhance each other without competing.
  • Roast venison with mushrooms: the wildness of the meat calls for the depth and structure this wine offers.

Scores

  • James Suckling: 98 points
  • Wine Advocate (Parker): 95+ points
