Alheit Vineyards, Cartology 2023

With Cartology, Chris and Suzaan Alheit create an annual portrait of South Africa's oldest Chenin Blanc vineyards. The grapes come from scattered plots with vines aged 35 to 60 years, planted on weathered granite and slate soils. Small production, international waiting lists.

What you smell
Ripe pear, lemon peel, chamomile, and a hint of beeswax. A subtly herbaceous undertone opens up as the wine warms.

What you taste
Broad and full on the palate, yet with crisp acidity that keeps everything in balance. A slightly saline, stony undertone recalls the granite soils. The finish is long, dry, and precise. Drink now or cellar until 2032.

How it's made
Chenin Blanc (approximately 94%) supplemented with small proportions of Sémillon and Verdelho. Spontaneous fermentation in concrete egg-shaped tanks and used French oak fûts. No filtration, no forcing.

Serving
Serve at 11°C. Give the wine fifteen minutes in a decanter or let it open gently in a large glass.

Pairs well with

  • Pan-fried sole with lemon: the richness of the butter and the freshness of the lemon mirror the wine's texture and acidity.
  • Creamy mushroom risotto: the earthy notes of the mushrooms align with the subtly herbaceous undertone.
  • Aged Comté: the nutty, caramel-like flavors of the cheese enhance the fullness without overpowering the freshness.

Scores

  • Tim Atkin MW: 96/100
  • Neal Martin, Vinous: 95/100
  • Platter's Wine Guide: 5 stars / 95 points
