Alheit Vineyards, Cartology 2022
Chris Alheit is the driving force behind the rediscovery of South Africa's old vineyards. For Cartology, he selects grapes from plants, sometimes over a hundred years old, spread across various plots with weathered granite and slate soils. The result is his calling card: a wine that showcases what old vines and minimal intervention can achieve.
What you smell
Ripe pear, lemon zest, and a hint of dried herbs. Not overpowering, but with depth.
What you taste
Full and rich, yet with enough freshness to keep everything in balance. The texture is silky without being heavy. The finish is long and slightly savory, with a stony undertone that makes you come back for the next sip. Enjoyable now, but will gain complexity over the next five to eight years.
How it's made
A blend primarily of Chenin Blanc with a small proportion of Sémillon, sourced from old vines in Swartland and around Stellenbosch. The juice ages for twelve months in concrete eggs and used wooden barrels. Unfiltered, to preserve the unique character of each vineyard.
Serve
Around 11°C. Decant for fifteen minutes before drinking or use a large glass for the aromas to fully open up.
Pairs well with
-
Pan-fried sole with lemon butter: the richness of the butter and the delicate fish call for a wine with both body and freshness.
-
Wild mushroom risotto: the creamy texture and earthy notes of the mushrooms complement the savory finish.
-
Aged hard cheese: the salty, nutty flavors of an old Gouda or Comté enhance the wine's mineral side.
