L'Oratoire des Papes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023
L'Oratoire des Papes has been making wine at the same location in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1880. The vineyards are dotted with the famous galets roulés, large rounded stones that store heat during the day and release it to the grapes at night. Beneath them is limestone soil, which provides tension and freshness in the wine.
What you smell
Fresh cherries and raspberries, with underlying aromas of dry Provençal herbs (thyme, rosemary, lavender) and a hint of black pepper.
What you taste
Full and juicy, yet surprisingly elegant for a Châteauneuf. The tannins are soft and provide structure without drying out your mouth. Beautiful freshness keeps the wine balanced, with a long finish where the fruit and herbs reappear. Already approachable, but can certainly age for another eight to ten years.
How it's made
A blend primarily of Grenache, supplemented with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. Matured in large oak foudres, preserving the fruit expression without dominant oak influence.
Serving
Serve around 16-17°C. Decant an hour in advance; this wine needs oxygen to open up. A large Burgundy glass works best.
Pairs well with
- Leg of lamb with thyme and garlic: the wine's herbaceous character perfectly complements the Mediterranean flavors of the meat.
- Braised beef or game ragout: the soft tannins and full body stand up to the richness of slow-cooked meat.
- Ratatouille with black olives: the Provençal herbs in the wine naturally echo the dish.
