Klein Constantia, Vin de Constance 2022
Klein Constantia has been making sweet wine in Constantia, one of the oldest wine regions outside of Europe, since 1685. The Vin de Constance was the favorite wine at European courts in the 18th and 19th centuries, from Napoleon to the British Royal Family. After a hiatus of almost a century, production resumed in 1986 following the original method.
What you smell
Fresh apricot, quince, and dried pineapple. Beneath that, salted caramel and elderflower.
What you taste
Ripe stone fruit (peach, nectarine) and lychee, with a sweetness that is never cloying. A saline undertone keeps everything fresh and taut. The finish is long, with subtle spicy notes. The natural acidity gives the wine a vibrancy that allows it to age for decades.
How it's made
100% Muscat de Frontignan, hand-harvested in 18 different rounds to select grapes at perfect ripeness each time. After a period of resting on the skins, the wine matures for three years in special wooden barrels. This adds texture without overpowering the fruit.
Serving
Between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius. No decanting needed. A small tulip glass works best to concentrate the aromas.
Great with
-
Stilton or Gorgonzola Piccante: the saltiness of the cheese and the sweetness of the wine enhance each other, while the acidity cuts through the fat.
-
Tarte tatin: the caramelized apple echoes the caramel notes in the wine, the butter finds balance in the freshness.
-
Foie gras or rich pâté: the sweetness and acidity lighten the richness, the fruit elevates the rich flavors.
