Klein Constantia, Vin de Constance 2021

Klein Constantia was founded in 1685 in Constantia, just outside Cape Town. In the 18th century, Vin de Constance was a beloved wine at European courts until the vineyard collapsed due to phylloxera in the mid-19th century. Production resumed in 1986. The 2021 is made from Muscat de Frontignan, hand-picked in 25 rounds over several months.

What you smell
Dried apricot, orange marmalade, blossom, and a warm undertone of sandalwood. Intense but not sticky.

What you taste
Full-bodied and creamy on the palate, with a sweetness immediately reined in by crisp acidity. Citrus, jasmine, and rose water notes appear. The finish is long and remains fresh, without being heavy. Already approachable, but can easily age for decades.

How it's made
100% Muscat de Frontignan from old vines. The grapes are picked in 25 selective passes to capture the perfect balance between sugar and acidity. The wine matures for over three years in small oak barrels, which adds subtle oxidative complexity without overpowering the fruit.

Serving
Between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius. Do not decant. A small white wine glass or dessert wine glass works best to keep the aromas concentrated.

Pairs well with

  • Roquefort or Stilton: the saltiness and pungency of blue cheese call for sweetness and freshness as a counterpoint.
  • Tarte Tatin: caramelized apple echoes the apricot and citrus notes in the wine.
  • Foie gras with fig compote: the creamy texture of foie gras finds its match in the full mouthfeel of this wine.
