Jean-Marc Burgaud, Morgon Côte du Py 2022

Jean-Marc Burgaud has been working in Villié-Morgon since 1989 and is considered one of the appellation's most consistent producers. The Côte du Py is Morgon's most famous hill: steep slopes with weathered blue volcanic rock. Critics consider the 2022 to be one of his best vintages to date.

What you smell
Ripe blackberries and plums, blood orange, slate and violets. A subtle spiciness underneath.

What you taste
Fuller than you'd expect from Gamay, with a firm core of dark fruit. The acidity keeps everything fresh, while an iron-like, salty undertone (typical of this volcanic soil) keeps the flavour lingering. Fine grip, no dry mouth. Accessible now, but can certainly age for five to eight years.

How it's made
Gamay from fifty-year-old vines on blue volcanic rock. Hand-harvested, then aged for nine months in concrete tanks. No new wood, so that the fruit and mineral soil notes remain prominent.

Serve
15 to 16 degrees Celsius. Given the concentration: decant an hour beforehand, or let it rest for another year. A large Burgundy glass works best.

Pairs well with

  • Grilled farm chicken with rosemary: the roasted fat and herbs connect with the fruit richness and slight spiciness of the wine.
  • Veal fillet or pork tenderloin: the fine structure of the meat matches the grip of the wine without either overpowering the other.
  • Risotto with wild mushrooms: the earthy, umami-rich flavours enhance the mineral side of this Morgon.

Scores

  • Decanter: 97/100
  • Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 94/100
  • Vinous: 94/100
