Dominio del Águila, Pícaro Viñas Viejas 2022

Jorge Monzón and Isabel Rodero work in La Aguilera with vineyards that are at least 75 years old. Their organic approach and artisanal vinification produce wines that stand out for their combination of power and finesse, even in a warm year like 2022.

What you smell
Blackcurrants, blackberries, and blue plum. Underlying notes of vanilla, fine herbs, and a lightly smoky accent from the wood.

What you taste
Full-bodied and powerful, yet with surprisingly much freshness. Juicy red fruit and balsamic notes. The tannins are ripe and chalky; they provide structure without drying. Long-lasting finish.

How it's made
Blend of old vines (Tempranillo, Garnacha, Albillo). Hand-harvested, foot-trodden, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts. Matured for nineteen months in French oak.

Serve
Between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. Decanting one hour beforehand allows the wine to open up even better.

Pairs well with

  • Roast leg of lamb with rosemary: the rich lamb and herbs find balance in the wine's freshness and tannin structure.
  • Venison with berry compote: the wine's dark fruit aromas seamlessly complement the sweet-sour sauce.
  • Aged Manchego: the ripe, chalky tannins cut through the fat of the cheese and enhance its nutty flavor.

Scores

  • Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 94 points
  • Tim Atkin: 91 points
  • Perswijn: 15.5 points
