Clos Saint Jean, La Combe Des Fous 2021
In 1905, Edmond Tacussel planted grapes on a bone-dry hillside strewn with enormous 'galets roulés'. Locals declared him mad. Four generations later, "the fools' plot" is one of the most sought-after parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with waiting lists for every vintage.
What you'll smell
Ripe blackberries and cherries, dried lavender, thyme, and a hint of cedar. Warm and inviting, without being overly sweet.
What you'll taste
Full-bodied and expansive, yet with surprising finesse. The tannins are fully integrated, making the wine silky smooth despite its concentration. Dark fruit, black olive, and a slight smokiness. The finish lingers for minutes with notes of licorice and warm spices. Already approachable, but built to age for another ten to fifteen years.
How it's made
Predominantly Grenache from old vines, complemented by Mourvèdre and Vaccarèse. The Grenache matures in concrete to preserve freshness, while the other grapes go into new oak barrels for structure and complexity. Manual harvest, strict selection.
Serve at
16 to 18°C. Decant for at least an hour, preferably in a large carafe. Use a large Burgundy glass.
Pairs well with
-
Grilled lamb with garlic and thyme: the herbaceous richness of the lamb mirrors the Mediterranean herbs in the wine.
-
Venison steak with red wine sauce: the wild, earthy notes of the game complement the dark fruit concentration.
-
Aged Comté or Manchego: the nutty sweetness of the cheese tempers the tannins and extends the finish.
Scores
